Rehabilitation Engineering

 

Rehabilitation engineering services have become a significant factor in assisting people with disabilities. Rehabilition engineers apply today's technologies to the specific needs of disabled individuals. This technology assists individuals to achieve personal independence and expands their opportunities for employment. The Center for Rehabilitation Science and Biomedical Engineering provides rehabilitation engineering field services. These services are provided through a grant from Louisiana Rehabilitation Services.

SERVICES

Rehabilitation engineers travel throughout the state visiting disabled clients in their homes, schools or worksites. The engineers personally studies each client's needs. After a careful evaluation of the problem, possible solutions are recommended. If a clinical assessment is required, the engineer helps the individual locate and secure this assessment.

 

GOALS

The goal of the rehabilitation engineer is to provide practical and economical solutions to the disabled individual's problems. Recognizing the personal nature of many of these adaptive devices, the engineer remains sensitive to the wishes and desires of the client. The ultimate goal is to enhance the quality of life for disabled individuals.

 

APPLICATIONS

Rehabilitation engineering services have been used successfully in the modification of homesites, workstations, adaptive computer controls, and various other equipment.

 

FACILITY RESOURCES

The Center has a machine shop, woodworking shop, and electronic shop. The Center also has a fully equipped computer access laboratory including eyegate/voice recognition systems, adaptive keyboards, mice and software. The rehabilitation engineer works with all Center staff members to find solutions to problems that face people with disabilities.
